Former Hearts of Oak and Black Stars head coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor praised Ghana captain Jordan Ayew. He recognized Ayew's leadership during the recent 2025 Unity Cup in London.
Ayew became the official captain of the senior national team in March. He has played a key role in Ghana’s recent success. The Leicester City forward led the Black Stars to important wins over Chad and Madagascar in World Cup qualifiers.
At the Unity Cup, Jordan wore the captain's armband again. He guided a young Ghana team through two tournament matches. Although they lost 2-1 to Nigeria in the semi-final, they won 4-0 against Trinidad and Tobago to secure third place.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Akonnor highlighted Ayew's influence on and off the pitch. “I like how Jordan showed great leadership,” he said. This leadership boosts confidence among younger players.
Ayew’s role is crucial as Ghana transitions with new talent. Head coach Otto Addo has introduced several young players during the Unity Cup.
The Black Stars will regroup in September for Matchday 7 and 8 of World Cup qualifiers. They will face Chad away and host Mali next. With Jordan Ayew leading, the team aims for a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
