“May 9th must never happen again” – Ghana marks 24 years since stadium tragedy

A solemn gathering took place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday. This event marked the 24th anniversary of the May 9th Stadium Disaster. The disaster claimed 127 lives during a Premier League game in 2001. The match was between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

The memorial ceremony included football administrators, government officials, and families of victims. Club representatives also attended to remember those lost. They recommitted to ensuring stadiums remain safe for fans.

Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, spoke at the event. He emphasized the government's commitment to work with all stakeholders. Their goal is to prevent future tragedies in sports venues.

GFA President Kurt Okraku shared similar thoughts during his speech. He stated that real tribute comes from taking concrete action. “The best way to honour those we lost is to ensure it never happens again,” he said. He highlighted the need for improved regulations and infrastructure for safer grounds.

The event concluded with prayers and wreath-laying at the May 9th Monument. This quiet gesture was emotional and meaningful for all attendees.
