Former Asante Kotoko chairman Herbert Mensah reflects on the May 9th stadium disaster. He says it has left a deep mark on his life.
Today, he spoke to commemorate the anniversary of the tragedy. Mensah shared how that day still affects him personally. In 2001, he was leading Kotoko during a fierce match against Hearts of Oak.
The game ended in disaster when police used tear gas in the stands. This caused a stampede, resulting in the deaths of 127 fans. It remains Ghana’s worst football tragedy.
Mensah described the impact on his life as immeasurable. He recalled not just the incident but its terrible aftermath.
He mentioned vivid memories: "the evening, the rainfall, and the smell of tear gas." He also remembered "the anguish on many faces."
"The confusion, anger, fear, and annoyance were overwhelming," he said. The emotions from that day are too many to count.
He reflected on touching bodies alive and those who were lost. The lasting impact affects him and those close to him deeply.
