The Nigerian Olympic Committee wants to make Nigeria a sports hub. This week, they announced they submitted an Expression of Interest. This is the first step toward hosting the centenary edition of the Games.
They aim to host the event in Abuja, Nigeria's capital. The document was sent to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). The CGF oversees the 2030 edition of the Games. If successful, Nigeria would be the first African country to host them.
NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya shared that next steps depend on government support. He expressed excitement about this possibility for Abuja. He believes it could showcase development and boost sports culture.
Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport tournament in 2003. That year, the All-Africa Games took place in Abuja. The experience showed Nigeria's ability to organize large international events effectively.
