Liverpool has signed Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. This marks Arne Slot’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old defender signed a three-year deal at Anfield. Liverpool activated his €35 million (£29.5 million) release clause. This move prepares the Reds for life after Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will leave for Real Madrid.
Frimpong can play as a right-back or right wing-back. He developed at Manchester City before joining Celtic in 2019. In January 2021, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen and thrived under Xabi Alonso.
During his time in Germany, Frimpong became crucial to Leverkusen's success. He helped the team go unbeaten and win the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal in the 2023/24 season.
Frimpong made 190 appearances for Leverkusen, scoring 30 goals and providing 44 assists. His former club Celtic will receive a sell-on fee of around £5 million.
Liverpool is also targeting Frimpong’s former teammate Florian Wirtz. They have reportedly submitted a significant bid for the talented playmaker.
