Polo: Ghana's sporting heroes deserve honour when they're alive

Legendary Ghanaian footballer Mohammed Polo has made an appeal. He urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ministry of Sports, and the Government to remember sporting heroes.

Polo, known as the "Dribbling Magician," was called up to the Black Stars at 17. In the 1978 African Cup of Nations, he scored a goal. Ghana won its third AFCON title that year. Polo was named in the CAF Team of the Tournament alongside three other Ghanaians. He played 54 matches for Ghana from 1973 to 1985, scoring 20 goals.

Polo emphasized that retired footballers should be honored for their contributions. He highlighted that it is important to recognize these players while they are alive. The ex-Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics left-winger questioned why past heroes are only honored posthumously.

“They are waiting for me to die before they honor me,” he said. “I want to be honored now because if I die, I don’t need it.” Polo spoke during the “Honoring the Legends” event in Accra recently.
