Security Breach: Nations FC pull plug on Basake match over Police gaps

Nations FC CEO, Kwame Twumasi Danquah, defended his club's decision. They delayed and eventually abandoned their match against Basake Holy Stars. The reason was inadequate police presence at the AAK Ampain II Sports Arena.

The Matchweek 33 encounter was crucial for the league title race. It was halted under controversial circumstances over the weekend. In an interview, Danquah emphasized player safety could not be guaranteed. This prompted their withdrawal from the game.

"We hadn’t started because we complained about insufficient police," he said. "We couldn’t take that risk." According to GFA regulations, clubs must ensure adequate security at matches. Nations FC claims Basake Holy Stars did not meet this requirement.

Tensions rose after a second penalty was awarded to Basake Holy Stars. This decision led to protests from the Nations FC bench. While some sources linked the penalty incident to the abandonment, Nations FC insists it was about security.

"We could not risk our players’ and staff’s well-being," Danquah stated. Afterward, Basake Holy Stars petitioned the Ghana Football Association (GFA). They argued that Nations FC left without justifiable cause and that all arrangements were made for the match.

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee has opened an investigation into this incident. They are requesting reports from match officials, both clubs, and the match commissioner. The GFA will decide whether to replay, forfeit, or award the match.

This ruling could impact final standings in a competitive GPL table.
