Former Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Eben Dida is calling for awareness. He wants people to remember the May 9th Stadium Disaster. This tragedy is Ghana’s worst football disaster.
On this anniversary, Dida reflected on the events of 2001. He was on the pitch during the match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko. He urged Ghanaians not to forget the lives lost that day.
The May 9th Disaster happened at the Accra Sports Stadium. A stampede during a league match resulted in 127 fan deaths. Crowd trouble and police response triggered this dark day in African football history.
Dida believes we should reflect each year on this tragedy. He emphasizes educating the public to prevent future incidents. "That day I was on the park," he said, recalling what happened.
He added that we must create awareness about this event. "We should not say the tragedy is in the past," he stated. Football remains popular, and similar incidents could happen again.
Dida expressed concern about a lack of awareness on anniversaries. "When it is anniversary day, we need to do it big," he said. This will help people learn how to stay safe at matches.
