The Ghana Federation for Disability Organizations (GFD) has expressed concerns over the safety and accessibility of polling stations for people with disabilities in the upcoming December 2024 elections.
Reflecting on the violence during the 2020 elections, GFD President Joseph Atsu Homadzi questioned how individuals with mobility challenges could escape violence at polling stations.
In response, the Electoral Commission assured that all stations would be accessible and violence-free, with provisions such as tactile jackets for the visually impaired and trained staff to assist voters.
The GFD also highlighted the need for greater inclusion of people with disabilities in leadership positions and called for urgent amendments to make Ghana's disability laws more aligned with international standards.
