Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has challenged claims portraying Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as Ghana’s first sitting presidential candidate to concede defeat before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration.

He cited the historic precedence of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, the 2000 NDC presidential candidate, who gracefully conceded defeat to the NPP’s John Agyekum Kufuor on December 29, 2000, ahead of the Electoral Commission’s formal announcement.

Prof. Mills’ act of statesmanship, acknowledged by Mr. Kufuor and the Electoral Commission, marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s democratic evolution.

Amidu noted Dr. Bawumia, whose father was a political figure during that era, should be aware of this historical record.

Prof. Mills’ example underscores the importance of political maturity in fostering peaceful transitions.
