The African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) significant parliamentary losses in the December 7 elections to widespread public dissatisfaction with the government’s performance.
Dr. Rasheed Draman, ACEPA’s Executive Director, stated that voters used the election to express frustration with the NPP’s governance, making MPs “collateral casualties” of the public’s anger.
Speaking on Citi FM, he clarified that the outcome reflected disapproval of the administration rather than individual MPs’ performances.
“Ghanaians decided to punish whoever was carrying an NPP colour, and some experienced MPs were swept away,” Dr. Draman noted.
Former President John Dramani Mahama won the presidential race, and the NDC secured 178 parliamentary seats compared to the NPP’s 75.
With results pending in eight constituencies, the NPP faces a dramatic reversal after previously holding a majority.
