Former Attorney General, Martin Amidu, has raised concerns about the erosion of Ghana’s democracy under President Akufo-Addo’s administration, urging citizens to protect free and fair elections.
Amidu criticized the president for using executive power to manipulate key public institutions, particularly the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing him of appointing EC officials without broad consultation.
He also highlighted the EC’s recent decision to limit media accreditation at collation centers and deny civil society organizations (CSOs) observer status.
Amidu stressed that the integrity of the December 2024 elections is crucial for the future of Ghana’s constitution, warning that failure to ensure transparency could deepen polarization and erode trust in democratic institutions.
He called for collective action to safeguard the election’s integrity.
