The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has called on the government to ensure uninterrupted internet access throughout Ghana’s 2024 election period.
Speaking at a press conference in partnership with Access Now and the Africa Open Data and Internet Research Foundation, the MFWA stressed that a secure and open internet is vital for promoting press freedom, transparency, and a free and fair electoral process.
Senior Programme Officer Kwaku Krobea Asante urged authorities, including the Ministries of Communications and Interior, NCA, and security agencies, to prevent internet shutdowns, citing similar incidents in other African nations.
The MFWA emphasized that open internet access is essential for combating misinformation, ensuring transparency in electoral activities, and preserving Ghana’s democratic integrity before, during, and after the elections.
