Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, has urged caution regarding military deployments during Ghana’s December 7 elections.
Speaking to Joy News, the seasoned diplomat emphasized the importance of balancing security needs with voters' comfort, warning that heavy military presence could intimidate citizens and create tension.
“Election security primarily falls within the police’s mandate, with the military acting as a backup in extreme cases,” Chambas stated.
Recalling lives lost in the 2020 elections, he stressed the need for restraint, urging the Ghana Armed Forces to intervene only when police efforts are overwhelmed.
Chambas praised the military’s assurances of a non-intrusive role, expressing confidence in Ghana's ability to safeguard its democratic process peacefully.
