Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante of CDD-Ghana has raised concerns about the lack of accountability within Ghana’s security agencies, warning it could jeopardize peace during the 2024 elections.
Speaking on JoyNews on November 30, he cited unresolved incidents from the 2020 elections where security personnel were linked to injuries and fatalities, stressing that impunity erodes public trust and discipline.
Dr. Asante also questioned the military’s role in elections, noting that their presence at collation centers in 2020 caused public anxiety.
He urged the Electoral Commission and Election Security Task Force to clearly define and communicate the military’s responsibilities.
Transparency in security arrangements, he emphasized, is critical to fostering trust, maintaining calm, and preventing a repeat of past issues.
