Private legal practitioner Justice Srem Sai has challenged the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to recount votes in nine constituencies, seven of which were redeclared for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The recounts, conducted on December 21, 2024, have sparked debate following the December 7 parliamentary elections.
The EC justified its actions by citing errors during collation, stating that all party representatives had acknowledged the mistakes. However, critics argue the EC overstepped its authority, as resolving disputes legally requires court intervention.
Speaking on Citi FM, Justice Srem Sai emphasized the legal framework distinguishing procedural corrections from dispute resolution. He asserted that disputes, where parties disagree, must be resolved in court, questioning whether the EC adhered to electoral laws.
Observers remain divided over the EC's interpretation of its mandate.
