Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has asserted that parliamentary candidates whose results were nullified by the Supreme Court on December 27, 2024, were ineligible for swearing-in.
The Supreme Court voided re-collated results in Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South due to irregularities, supporting Bagbin's stance. He emphasized that parliamentary membership requires election by voters, declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC), and swearing-in by the Speaker.
“The so-called MPs-elect were unknown to the law,” Bagbin stated, dismissing the re-collations as unlawful.
The decision followed an NDC challenge to a High Court directive for re-collation in nine constituencies. The party argued that the process undermined electoral credibility.
Bagbin reaffirmed his role as gatekeeper, ensuring adherence to lawful procedures.
