Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the economic struggles in the Ashanti Region, Ghana’s business hub, blaming the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for worsening conditions.
Speaking in Kumasi, Mahama highlighted issues like high taxes, excessive port duties, and a weakening cedi, which he says have led to the collapse of many businesses.
He pointed out that traders are now avoiding Ghana’s Tema port due to high costs, using Lomé in Togo instead.
Mahama also criticized Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s promise to shift the economy from "taxation to production," claiming that increased taxes have hindered job creation and caused the collapse of key sectors, including microfinance and banking.
