Ghana’s Vice-President, Mahamudu Bawumia, has conceded defeat in the recent election, congratulating opposition candidate John Mahama on his victory.
"The people have voted for change," Bawumia stated, citing internal New Patriotic Party (NPP) tallies showing Mahama's decisive win in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Despite no official results from the Electoral Commission (EC), Mahama's supporters have begun nationwide celebrations.
Bawumia said he chose to concede early to maintain peace amid rising tensions, as Ghana grapples with its worst economic crisis in decades.
Outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo is stepping down after two terms, making way for Mahama, 65, who previously led Ghana from 2012 to 2017.
The victory continues Ghana's trend of alternating power between the NDC and NPP every two terms.
