Ghana's Electoral Commission has declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the 2024 presidential election, securing 56.55% of the vote.
Mahama’s main opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday, easing tensions ahead of the results. The commission reported that votes from 267 out of 276 constituencies had been counted, with a voter turnout of 60.9%.
Mahama, who served as president from 2012 to 2016, emphasized that his victory was a direct response to the country's economic challenges, criticizing the current government's policies under Bawumia’s leadership for causing Ghana's worst economic crisis in decades.
In his victory speech, Mahama vowed to implement "severe measures and governance reforms" to "reset the nation" and promised to renegotiate Ghana’s IMF bailout, overhaul tax policies, and invest heavily in infrastructure modernization.
