The 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic is set to take a dramatic turn, with early results pointing to a National Democratic Congress (NDC) majority.

The 2024 parliamentary elections have delivered surprising outcomes, as the NDC managed to flip several constituencies traditionally held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This shift has seen some of the most prominent NPP MPs lose their seats, signaling a change in voter preferences and a potential reconfiguration of Ghana’s political landscape.

One of the significant upsets came in Gomoa Central, where Naana Eyiah Quansah of the NPP lost to Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus. A Plus, a musician and political activist, secured 14,277 votes against Naana’s 11,637.

Similarly, in Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryor of the NDC defeated incumbent MP and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, with a margin of over 5,000 votes.

In urban constituencies, Dakoa Newman of Okaikwei South lost her seat to Ernest Adomako of the NDC, while Henry Quartey of Ayawaso Central was defeated by Abdul-Rauf Tubazu. In both cases, the results highlighted a growing dissatisfaction with the NPP among urban voters.

Meanwhile, in Asante Akyem North, independent candidate Ohene Kwame Frimpong won decisively, garnering over 26,000 votes and unseating Andy Appiah-Kubi of the NPP.

Other notable losses include long-serving MP KT Hammond in Adansi-Asokwa, who was defeated by NDC candidate Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani.

Similarly, Egyapa Mercer of Sekondi lost to Blay Nyameke Armah, marking a significant NDC gain in an NPP stronghold. Farouk Mahama, representing the NPP in Yendi, also fell to Abdul Fatawu Alhassan of the NDC in a closely contested race.

The NPP’s sole seat in the Volta Region, held by John Peter Amewu in Hohoe, was reclaimed by the NDC’s Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo. This loss underscores the challenges the NPP faces in maintaining its presence in the region.

Additionally, high-profile incumbents like Ursula Owusu-Ekuful in Ablekuma West and Bernard Okoe-Boye in Ledzokuku lost to NDC candidates, further consolidating the opposition’s gains.
