Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea has asserted that the Electoral Commission (EC) has the constitutional authority to re-collate election results in disputed constituencies without requiring a court order.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Atta Akyea emphasized that the EC can independently address discrepancies, including cases of alleged fraud or omissions in polling station results, to uphold electoral credibility.
He questioned the need for legal mandates, arguing the EC’s autonomy under Ghana’s Constitution enables it to act in the interest of fairness.
His remarks follow a Supreme Court ruling overturning a High Court decision that had directed the EC to re-collate results, reigniting debates on the commission's role in resolving electoral disputes.
