A/R: 2 dead, many trapped in galamsey pit collapse at Mpasatia

An illegal mining pit collapsed at Mpasatia Yaw Nkwantah in the Atwima Mponua District, Ashanti Region, killing two people on Tuesday morning.

Rescue efforts are ongoing as more miners are feared trapped underground.

Community members, alongside security agencies, retrieved the bodies, which have been sent to a morgue for identification.

Reports indicate the concession owner allowed mining without proper oversight.

Nana Nkansah, a resident, attributed the collapse to deep excavation that weakened the ground.

This is not the first such incident at the site, raising concerns despite ongoing crackdowns by the Ashanti Regional Security Council on illegal mining.
