Amakye-Bare residents declare war on illegal mining

Residents of Amakye-Bare in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District have vowed to block any future illegal mining activities after successfully driving out miners through a fierce protest.

The community, which relies on farming, fears the destruction of farmlands and contamination of their only water source.

Chief farmer Emmanuel Opoku stressed that illegal mining threatens their livelihoods, warning that polluted water would cripple local businesses, including maize farming and kenkey production.

Residents are also concerned about the Barekese Dam, which supplies water to Kumasi.

Tensions remain high after a young resident was arrested following clashes with miners. As a land reclamation exercise continues, the community insists they will not back down, warning that any future mining attempt will be fiercely resisted.
