Former Majority Leader Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has strongly criticized Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to suspend four Members of Parliament following the chaos during the ministerial vetting on January 30, 2025.
Speaking on Joy News, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu argued that neither the Constitution nor the Standing Orders grant the Speaker the authority to impose such sanctions.
While acknowledging the relevance of Order 342, he questioned Bagbin’s legal basis for taking unilateral action.
“The Speaker has jumped the gun and acted beyond the law,” he stated, suggesting that Bagbin’s decision was an overreach.
His comments add to growing debates over parliamentary discipline and the Speaker’s role in enforcing order.
