Award-winning journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has strongly criticized the government's handling of illegal mining, arguing that military interventions have failed to yield results.
Speaking on Abusua 96.5 FM, Erastus highlighted the inefficiency of the Ashanti Regional Minister’s response to galamsey operations in the Jimira Forest Reserve. He noted that despite claims of military deployment, the delay in their arrival allowed miners to escape with over 50 excavators.
He warned that Ghana’s water bodies are nearing total destruction, with only Lake Volta remaining relatively unaffected.
Farmers, he said, now struggle to find clean water for irrigation as illegal mining devastates nearby rivers.
Erastus called for urgent action, proposing that the government declare water bodies and forest reserves as ‘red zones’ under a state of emergency to halt further destruction.
He also revealed threats against his life for his activism but vowed to continue exposing illegal mining operations.
