A joint operation by the Forestry Commission’s Rapid Response Unit and the military has led to a major clampdown on illegal mining in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve, Western North Region.

On March 9, 2025, authorities seized 10 excavators and a bulldozer while arresting four individuals in Compartments 17 and 20.

This follows a previous raid on March 4, where 12 excavators were cleared out, though no arrests were made due to armed resistance.

Intelligence reports revealed miners attempted to reclaim the site, prompting additional enforcement efforts.

Despite resistance, security forces successfully secured the area.

The seized machinery has been moved to the Enchi District Assembly, with the police formally notified.

The operation highlights ongoing government efforts to protect Ghana’s forests from illegal mining.
