The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, led by convener Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency to address the escalating menace of illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).
The group highlighted recent incidents at Ntrotroso and Obuasi as grave threats to national security and cohesion.
In its statement, the coalition demanded an immediate halt to mining activities within 100 meters of rivers and streams, the abrogation of concessions in sensitive biodiversity areas, and military intervention to clear illegal miners from water bodies.
Despite efforts during the 2024 election campaign, including pledges from eight presidential candidates, the situation has worsened, with calls for decisive action under Act 995 to protect Ghana’s water resources and environment.
