Rescue efforts continue at Mpasatia after an illegal mining pit collapsed, claiming two lives.

Community members, with police support, recovered the bodies on April 1. It remains uncertain whether more victims are trapped beneath the debris.

Led by Kwaku Duah, the search team has been working tirelessly since 5 a.m., using basic tools to dig through the site.

He noted that a community mining scheme previously operated in the area but was halted under the new government. Despite this, illegal mining activities have persisted, making the rescue mission challenging.

Local authorities, including Assembly Member Salifu Ibrahim, have long called for the closure of the pits, but no action has been taken.

“We pray no more bodies will be found,” he stated, adding that families have not reported additional missing persons since the incident.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns about illegal mining in abandoned sites despite repeated warnings.
