Illegal miners attempt to mine at Neung South Forest Reserve

Reports suggest a looming threat of illegal mining in the Neung South Forest Reserve in Tarkwa District, Western Region.

Eyewitnesses have spotted three excavators and a washing plant about 700 meters from the reserve, with barriers set up to block Forestry Commission (FC) staff.

The illegal miners accuse FC staff of inaction after a colleague was allegedly killed by guards of Kapsord Mining Limited, which now manages the area.

Previously dominated by illegal miners, the site is now protected by a security post established by Kapsord guards.

Tensions escalated when the security post was set ablaze following a clash.

Heavily armed men in camouflaged uniforms were also seen speeding toward the reserve, raising further concerns.
