Illegal miners clash with security forces as 15 excavators seized in Tano Anwia Forest raid

A joint operation between the legal concession owner and the Forestry Commission has led to the seizure of 15 excavators from illegal miners entrenched in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

However, the operation has been met with resistance and controversy.

Since the raid began on Thursday, armed policemen from the Enchi District and Divisional Police Commands have challenged the legitimacy of the task force’s presence, leading to heated exchanges before the police withdrew.

Adding to the tension, the Western North Regional Minister reportedly halted the removal of the seized equipment, stating that he had not been informed of the operation.

This move, according to sources, emboldened some illegal miners to attempt retrieving their machinery.

Despite a temporary suspension following an alleged order from the Second-in-Command (2IC) of the 2nd Battalion—which was later refuted—the task force resumed its mission.

Reports indicate that illegal mining activities in the forest have intensified this year, with armed groups defending their operations.

The raid, now in its fourth day, has seen efforts to seize an additional 25 excavators obstructed by illegal miners.

Authorities continue to grapple with deep-seated interests and corruption allegations in their bid to reclaim the forest.
