A group of illegal miners, known as "Galamsey operators," has invaded a large concession belonging to the Ghana Consolidated Mining Company (Akwatia Diamonds), clearing vegetation for mining.
Videos and photos show extensive land destruction, with the miners led by a senior citizen whose identity remains undisclosed.
The illegal activities have damaged high-tension power lines within the concession, risking major power outages across the country if the lines collapse during storms.
A concerned local resident, Mr. Robert Bosompim, has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to intervene by sending a task force to stop the illegal miners, as the police are reportedly reluctant to act due to powerful backing of the miners.
