Illegal miners overrun Asantehene’s concession: Questions over accountability

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised concerns over illegal mining on a gold prospecting concession granted to him, stating that unauthorized operations are taking place without his knowledge.

Investigations by The Fourth Estate reveal that despite Bodukwan Holding Company Limited holding only a prospecting license, mining activities have been detected on the site, raising environmental and legal concerns.

The company, linked to the Manhyia Palace, lacks key regulatory approvals, including an EPA permit.

Environmental activists argue that concession holders bear responsibility for preventing illegal mining.

With the government’s past commitments to combat galamsey, the pressing question remains—will authorities act decisively, or will the impunity surrounding illegal mining persist even on high-profile concessions?
