Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has cautioned lawmakers against engaging in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, warning of serious repercussions for any MP found involved.

Addressing Parliament on January 28, he stressed the need for legislators to set an example by upholding the law rather than contributing to environmental destruction.

Bagbin declared that if evidence surfaced implicating any MP in galamsey, Parliament would take action. His remarks come amid ongoing concerns over illegal mining’s devastating impact on water bodies and forests.

Despite successive governments' efforts to curb the menace through bans and task forces, galamsey persists, often fueled by political complicity.

The Speaker urged MPs to take personal responsibility and distance themselves from such unlawful activities.
