Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has called on journalists to play an active role in combating illegal mining (galamsey) by raising awareness and shaping public discourse.
Speaking on Channel One TV, he emphasized the media’s responsibility in addressing the crisis.
“The media has a huge role to play. We are broadening stakeholder consultations and enhancing sensitization efforts,” he said.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening collaborations with journalists, traditional leaders, and security agencies.
He highlighted the need for a coordinated approach, as many illegal miners operate with sophisticated weaponry, requiring joint efforts from the Ministries of Defence and Interior to tackle the menace effectively.
