The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has issued a one-month ultimatum for miners to remove all excavators and equipment operating along the Birim River.
This directive, announced by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council on January 22, 2025, follows reports from the Ghana Water Company Limited about rising turbidity levels threatening water supply in Kyebi and its surrounding areas.
A special task force will confiscate any equipment still in operation after February 28, 2025.
The Council emphasized that no mining activities are permitted near or within rivers.
The Birim River, a critical water source for the region, has suffered pollution, causing shutdowns and reduced capacity at key treatment plants.
Residents have raised concerns over erratic water supplies.
This action seeks to protect water resources and enforce environmental laws.
