A police officer has drowned in the River Offin during an anti-galamsey operation at Assin Asaman in the Central Region.
The officer, identified as Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, drowned on Wednesday morning while attempting to evacuate and destroy illegal mining equipment. His body was recovered after a four-hour search.
The operation, led by the Central North Regional Police Command, aimed to curb illegal mining activities, which continue to damage land and pollute water bodies.
According to reports, suspected miners fled across the river when police arrived.
During the operation, Constable Dogbe slipped and drowned while handling equipment, including changfang machines and water pumps used for mining.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tackling galamsey despite the risks involved.
