Youth activist and lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called on President Akufo-Addo to revoke all 2000 mining licenses issued by the previous government, citing concerns over the detrimental impact on Ghana’s environment.
In a social media post, Barker-Vormawor highlighted reports of illegal mining in forest reserves and criticized the issuance of these licenses, some of which were granted after the 2020 election.
He argued that the country must take urgent action to address the environmental disaster caused by unchecked mining, warning that Ghana could soon face a crisis with drinking water.
He called for a moratorium on new mining licenses and a comprehensive reset in the country's approach to environmental protection. The activist has also planned a protest on March 6 under the banner of #StopGalamsey.
