Two illegal miners die in pit collapse at Akyea Kukubi

Two illegal miners, Solomon Kumi (28) of Akyem Bomso and James Mummuni Naaba (32) of Akyem Asuom, died after being trapped in a collapsed mining pit at Akyea Kukubi in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The incident occurred on Thursday, December 19, 2024, prompting local residents to alert authorities.

Officials retrieved the bodies, now at the Kade Government Morgue awaiting autopsy.

Municipal authorities, the police, and NADMO are investigating the cause of the tragedy.

This comes amidst a surge in illegal mining activities since the December 7 elections, which have worsened pollution in major water bodies, particularly the Birim River.
