Political Science Lecturer and President of the University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association (UTAG), Prof Ransford Gyampo, has revealed that UTAG has met with the government regarding its pact to halt galamsey.
Before the 2024 elections, UTAG had engaged with all political aspirants, signing an agreement that mandated them to end illegal mining (galamsey) within three months of forming a government.
After suspending a strike due to near-election inactivity, UTAG met with the current government on January 22 to remind them of the agreement.
Prof Gyampo emphasized that UTAG’s focus remains on ensuring the government adheres to the pact, following previous efforts to pressure for action.
The association had earlier called off its strike to allow students back to school but made clear its resolve to hold the government accountable.
