Illegal gold miners have destroyed a royal cemetery in Yaase, Ashanti Region, using excavators to dig up topsoil, scattering human skulls around the site.
This shocking incident has stirred outrage among locals.
The miners’ activities also led to pollution of the nearby River Adunsu, a key water source for the community, and caused damage to cocoa and plantain farms.
Local officials, including the chief of Yaase and the assembly member, have confirmed the destruction, though the assembly member admitted he failed to report the environmental concerns to the EPA.
The matter is under investigation by the Adonte Traditional Council, with the community calling for action to address the environmental and cultural damage caused by illegal mining.
