Dr. Ken Ashigbey, convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has called on President John Mahama to confront illegal mining activities involving politically exposed persons.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points, Ashigbey accused both NDC and NPP members of collaborating in galamsey operations and urged the government to act decisively, including investigating Akonta Mining despite past claims by ex-President Akufo-Addo.
He also cited allegations involving top NDC figures. In response, Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak has ordered the transfer of all police commanders in mining zones, blaming their ineffectiveness in tackling illegal mining.
New officers will face a three-month probation period. Muntaka reaffirmed the directive during a meeting with Zongo Chiefs, signaling renewed efforts to combat galamsey and protect Ghana’s environment from further destruction.
