The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology, has established an 18-member committee to develop a blueprint for mining sector reforms.
Chaired by Professor Oteng Ababio of the University of Ghana, the committee has two weeks to propose strategies to tackle illegal mining and protect Ghana’s environment.
The committee will review mining licenses, assess activities in forest reserves, and suggest measures to prevent mining in water bodies.
Minister Armah-Kofi Buah highlighted the devastating impact of illegal mining, revealing that 15% of Ghana’s forest reserves have been affected.
Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed emphasized a multifaceted approach to fighting illegal mining.
Traditional leaders, led by Dormahene Nana Agyeman Badu II, pledged their full support for the initiative.
