Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has revealed that he attempted to mediate between the Majority and Minority members of the Appointments Committee before tensions escalated into violent disruptions on January 30.
Speaking before Parliament’s Special Committee investigating the incident, Ayariga said he urged both sides to reach a compromise, but neither was willing to back down.
The dispute arose after the Majority insisted on proceeding with the vetting, despite the Minority’s request to postpone it to January 31.
The standoff led to the destruction of parliamentary property.
Ayariga noted that nominees, along with their families and traditional leaders, had waited all day, making rescheduling difficult. He described the situation as a logistical challenge rather than a numbers game.
