The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has intensified investigations into illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, focusing on corruption fueling the practice.
Despite years of environmental devastation, calls for urgent action have increased, with civil society groups demanding a state of emergency in affected areas.
The OSP’s probe now targets key institutions, including the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Forestry Commission, and Akonta Mining Limited, linked to operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
The dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) and allegations involving Municipal and District Chief Executives (MCEs and DCEs) are also under scrutiny.
This widened investigation aims to expose systemic corruption, ensuring accountability in Ghana’s fight against illegal mining and its long-term socio-economic impact.
