Ken Ashigbey
The Convener of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition, Ken Ashigbey, has urged the government to establish a 24-hour fast-track court to prosecute foreign nationals engaged in illegal mining before their deportation.
His call comes after Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak warned that any foreigner found involved in galamsey or fraudulent activities would be repatriated.
Speaking on Citi FM, Ashigbey argued that deportation alone is ineffective due to Ghana’s porous borders. He suggested that offenders should be fined, with the proceeds used to restore damaged forests and water bodies.
While commending the government’s efforts, he emphasized that stricter enforcement measures are needed to deter illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
