Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has initiated an investigation into a petition alleging an MP’s involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Addressing a conference on responsible small-scale mining on February 26, Bagbin emphasized that Parliament would not shield any lawmaker implicated in destructive mining activities.
He confirmed that the accused MP had already appeared before him as part of the inquiry. Stressing the importance of accountability, he warned that any legislator found complicit would face legal consequences.
“We cannot demand integrity from the nation while ignoring misconduct within our own ranks,” he stated.
The probe underscores Parliament’s stance against illegal mining, a major environmental and socio-economic issue in Ghana.
