In November 2024, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, then-Majority Leader, declared he would never sit in the Minority Leader’s chair, citing spiritual and political reasons.
He argued that such a move symbolized accepting a minority position, which he deemed unacceptable.
Fast forward to January 2025, after the NPP secured only 83 parliamentary seats in the December elections, Afenyo-Markin now leads his caucus from the Minority bench.
This shift prompted a jab from Majority MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who humorously questioned whether it was now “spiritually okay” for Afenyo-Markin to occupy the Minority Leader’s chair.
The quip highlights the irony of Afenyo-Markin's earlier stance as Ghana’s Parliament enters a new chapter, coinciding with President John Mahama’s inauguration as a testament to the nation’s democratic maturity.
