Unidentified youth set fire to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga’s house in Bawku

Tensions in Bawku have intensified following an attack on the residence of Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, by unidentified youth on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

The youth vandalized and partially set fire to the property amid ongoing violence stemming from a longstanding chieftaincy dispute.

The military has intervened, securing strategic positions to prevent further escalation.

This attack follows a deadly clash between youth groups and law enforcement the day before, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries.

The violence began when youth from one faction forced market women from a rival group to vacate, leading to a confrontation with police that escalated into a crossfire.

The unrest also led to the burning of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander’s residence and other police facilities. Authorities have increased patrols in an attempt to stabilize the area, but tensions remain high.
