Effutu MP and Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says he cannot compel Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconvene Parliament but will pursue constitutional avenues to address the NPP caucus' grievances.
This follows Bagbin’s rejection of a request to recall Parliament before the December 7 elections to address urgent state matters.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized the NPP’s focus on winning the elections decisively to secure a majority in Parliament and implement key policies. He accused the Speaker of autocratic behavior amid ongoing parliamentary uncertainties.
The impasse stems from Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, affecting three NPP and one NDC members contesting as independents.
Though the Supreme Court ruled the decision unconstitutional, Bagbin has yet to recall the House, leaving Parliament in a state of limbo.
